A Lewes Diary

Alice Dudeney’s delightfully malicious diaries were withheld from publication for some 40 years. She vividly describes her tragi-comic marriage to the mathematician, Henry Dudeney, her career as a novelist, her lover and two world wars, as well as her forays into High Society through her friendship with Sir Philip Sassoon. This 2012 revised edition contains further revelations.

A Lewes Diary, 1916-44 by Mrs Henry Dudeney, Dale House Press, illustrated. £9.99. Revised Edition 2012.

  1. Fascinated by the 1998 version (I am currently in the middle of reading it). Thank you so much for this book. I am learning a lot about early 20th century British culture and continue to be stumped by some things. Are there more diary entries in the newer edition? – A reader in the USA.

    • I’m so glad you’re enjoying A Lewes Diary even if our odd English ways stump you from time to time. The second edition is extended by about 50 pages but mainly includes details of Mrs Dudeney’s affair with David (Paul Hardy) which I was not able to put in the first edition. You might not learn more about 20th century British culture but you would learn more about affairs of the heart.
